How to cook Stuffed Squash Flowers
Edible flowers are some of my favorite things to use in my cuisine. In this video I show you how to make a traditional Italian dish, stuffed squash flowers. It’s a wonderful summertime appetizer I make with shredded mozzarella cheese and basil with a pesto dip on the side. A flavorful original mozzarella stick you really should try at home. Enjoy and thanks for watching! … gardening garden squash “fried squash flowers”
Yup, everyone else is right, olive oil is made up of mostly monounsaturated fats, which shouldn’t be used for frying. (though, it would’ve been even worse had she used a polyunsaturated oil x_x) It’s best to fry in oil with a high saturated fat content like coconut and palm oil, or lard.
I’m definitely going to try this recipe though.
what?! WHEN YOU EAT OLIVE OIL TO HIGH TEMPERATURES IT BECOMES CARCINOGENIC! Never shallow/deep fry in olive oil.
i lived in Greece olive oil cannot be heated more than 200 degrees or less because it turns toxic. Use ” gee instead clarified butter” Gee actually is also a toxic chemical remover in the body. It last forever and olive oil gets rancid after a while.
Good food but the heated oil killed the nutrients in the flower.
olive oil has a low smoking point…next time half it out with peanut or canola
Can you do that same with zucchini flowers?
Great video — who knew you could eat the flowers? I have tons of yellow squash planted this year and I’m definitely going to try this recipe. I also have a pumpkin vine that is starting to bloom right now…. I’m going to try the pumpkin blooms first! Thanks Patti
Thank you for showing me how to cook the flowers… they are so beautiful to look at in the garden its been difficult to want to eat them though!
Is there any squash flowers I should avod using for this? I have butternut, spagetti, summer…and more. Also what about pumpkin flowers and such?
Thanks Patti, great job as usual!
That looks absolutely delicious! What a great idea
I can’t wait to try it.
Thanks Patti!
Male flowers born first and they usually come in groups, they are long and you may find pollen inside.
Female flowers are lonely and the base of the flower is wider. Take a look inside both flowers and you will see the difference…
Wow - this is amazing. I never knew you could eat flowers like this. This is another great Garden Girl video!
I NEED THAT FOOD!!!!!!
looks delicious
How can u tell the difference between the male and female?
while you’re right that olive oil has a relatively low smoke point, it’s actually generally fine for things like this. The smoke point for olive oil is approximately 375 for extra virgin. Most deep frying is done at 350. So, if you need something really hot, yes, it isn’t the best choice, but it’s fine for most things. By the way, peanut oil is my high heat oil of choice.
Looks great! Thank you for sharing.
Looks very tasty
Coconut oil is good too, that’s what I use to deep fry.
Deep frying in olive oil??? Olive oil actually has very low smoking point (you must have noticed the smoke) and burning it like you did destroys all the good things in it and actually produces some harmful ones. Try using sunflower oil instead.
Dont cut females flowers because they´ll become future squash. Only use male flowers and dont forget to remove pistil otherwise your food may have a bitter taste.
Google squash blossom quesadillas and soup, they are terrific!!
patti i need a plate…lol
Very well explained. Lovely vid, Patti.
